Coffeehouse will expand into Phoenix with a development deal for three new locations
in San Tan Valley and Queen Creek.

The company, known as the “Home of High-Altitude Roasting,” will be franchised by
Howard Sparks Jr. and Brandi Adams, Marty and Tabitha Carter, and Pete and Paige
Hargis, according to an announcement from the coffee shop.
“We have excellent franchise owners who came to us wanting to partner with us and
expand,” Kim Falk, the company’s vice president of franchise development, said. “They
are amazing people with wonderful business acumen and fit the culture of the brand.”
The franchise owners — who all live in the San Tan Valley and Queen Creek area except
for the Carters — are still looking for locations for the first coffee shops, she said. They
are looking for buildings around 1,700 square feet in size and with drive-thrus.
Falk called moving into Phoenix a “tremendous step forward” for Beans & Brews. She
expects the first location will likely open in 12 months.
The development deal is part of Beans & Brews expanding in Nevada, Colorado, New
Mexico and Texas, Falk said.

Founded in 1993 in Salt Lake City, Beans & Brews has 67 locations across Utah, Nevada
and Idaho, as well one Arizona location in Colorado City. Twenty locations are in
development.

Falk described Beans & Brews as the preferred coffeehouse of Utah, citing its highaltitude roasted beans and welcoming, calm atmosphere.

The beans are roasted at lower temperatures for longer times in Salt Lake City’s high
elevation, resulting in a “smooth, intense flavor,” Falk said. Its “health conscious” menu
also includes breakfast foods, sandwiches, sodas and teas, including dairy substitutions
and meat-free and plant-based products.

Continued expansion in the Valley

Falk said Beans & Brews is also looking into expanding in more Valley locations, such as
Scottsdale, Chandler and Glendale.

“We’re an amazing brand ready to expand and would love other franchise owners that
want to partner with us that meet that same cultural fit,” she said.
The initial investment to open a new coffeehouse location, including franchise fee,
ranges from $400,000 to $650,000, the company said.

Among the current franchise owners, Sparks previously worked as a fraud, risk and
underwriting manager in the finance industry, the coffeehouse said. Adams, his wife,
has experience in retail, accounting and as a pathology technician.
Marty Carter served nearly 20 years in the United States Coast Guard and has a decade
of experience in food and drink. Tabitha Carter, his wife, worked in customer service for
15 years.

Pete and Page Hargis, described as “serial entrepreneurs,” own a rental property
company. Paige Hargis is a real estate agent, and Pete Hargis owns and operates a
sports training facility.
